We visited Falls Park several times during our three-month stay in Sioux Falls. As often as we could, we rode the bike trail from our campsite to Falls Park. This scenic trail travels through several parks, across the river, and past the zoo.
After getting our inflatable kayak, we floated the Big Sioux River through downtown Sioux Falls and took out as near the falls as we could.
One of the first places we took our grandson, Trey after arriving in Sioux Falls was Falls Park. You can read about all the places we visited in our post, Grandson-Friendly Fun in Sioux Falls South Dakota.
Exploring Falls Park
The day we took Trey to Falls Park was July 18, 2018. It was overcast, which helped with the summer heat. We were almost done exploring the falls and surrounding area when the sky opened up, and heavy rain soaked us before we reached our car.
The water was down a bit, so the rain was welcome.
Here are pictures of the falls taken in mid-July.
September Rains
It was an average summer, and the area received enough rain to keep the river floatable, and the area around the falls walkable.
The September rains started September 18 and continued to fall through the 21st. After several rounds of thunderstorms, a total of up to 10 inches fell throughout the area. According to the weather service, this brought the total rainfall for the year to 34.26 inches.
On Sunday evening, the 23rd, we visited Falls Park and, with many others, took in the changes caused by the rising water.
Here are some of the pictures from our September 23rd visit.
We hope you enjoyed these pictures of Falls Park. There are several state parks in the Sioux Falls area. Read out them here.
