Sunday Fun at Pearl Market and Hemisfair Park

Strolling the River Walk Near Pearl Market

On Sunday morning, we revisited the River Walk, this time near the famous Pearl Weekend Market

Located in front of the historic Pearl brewery, the Sunday market features specialty and prepared foods. Approaching the market area, we saw colorful canopies and umbrellas, breathed in the delicious scent of foods cooking, and heard the excited laughter of children.

We strolled through the market, stopping at several shops to sample products, visit with the merchants, and take in the fun atmosphere.

We continued through the area, walking past the market, behind the old brewery, and into the Amphitheatre.

Looking down from the top of the amphitheater, we saw the San Antonio River. It was a pleasant surprise as we hadn’t realized how close the Pearl Market was to the river.

Museum Reach District

Soon, we were walking along the River Walk, away from the market, and towards Pearl Springs. This section of the walkway is called Museum Reach. It features waterfalls, plant life and is home to various waterfowl.

We continued north a short distance, where we took the bridge across, heading back towards the market on the opposite side of the river. This section of the river is home to many lily pads.

The river shuttles run along the River Walk from downtown through the Museum Reach area. They are a popular way to get around and see the city.

Continuing our stroll south past Pearl Market, we soon reached The Grotto. This area contains an artificial cave with water features and stalactites.

It was time to head back to the Pearl Market and grab some lunch. We walked back up the steps to the street level and, once again, crossed over to the other side of the river. Pictured below is The Grotto from the bridge.

While crossing over, we saw this unique structure located on the corner of Camden St. and Newell Ave.

After returning to Pearl Springs, we ate lunch at a Mexican restaurant with outdoor seating overlooking the river. Refreshed and rested, we were ready to see more of San Antonio. After a quick check on the map, we were in our car and driving the short distance to Hemisfair Park.

Exploring Hemisfair Park

Tower of the Americas

Located in the middle of Hemisfair Park, the 750 foot tall Tower of the Americas was built as the theme structure for the 1968 World’s Fair, Hemisfair ’68. Tickets are required to enter the tower. The price includes the ride to the top and several 4D movies. We particularly enjoyed Skies Over Texas.

After purchasing our tickets and receiving our wrist bands, we rode the elevator to the observation deck. It was a smooth ride and not a bit scary.

The Flags Over Texas Observation Deck features photos and descriptions of the six flags that once flew over Texas. There are also photos on the deck’s floor to identify landmarks in the area of the city you are viewing out the window.

For those that want the full experience, there is an outdoor deck. We went outside.

We walked around the deck, stopping to take pictures and looking for landmarks. This picture includes the downtown area.

We also discovered bats hanging out on the observation deck.

While in the tower, we saw another Zoltar, just like the one we saw in Bryan, Texas.

After reaching the ground level, we walked the area near the tower. There are several fountains and sculptures within a short walking distance.

Yanaguana Garden

Continuing through the park, we entered Yanaguana Garden. This garden has a popular play area, featuring climbing structures, games, and a splash pad.

We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the Hemisfair Park, often stopping to enjoy a fountain, a frozen treat, or just to people watch. If you are planning a visit to San Antonio, stop by the park and check it out.

The next day we went back to the San Antonio River with our kayak. If you would like to receive a notification when our kayaking post is ready, complete the Subscribe section below.
